If you ask a local, they will tell you the surf at Coronado beach is best around high tide, when the tide is rising and to arrive in the early morning, before the wind is up. Waves break both left and right and optimum swell direction comes from the southwest. The best summer surfing is at North Beach. The best winter surfing is in front of the Coronado Shores towers, south of Avenida Del Sol and the Hotel del Coronado.
Silver Strand State Beach: Although kiteboarding and kite surfing are used interchangeably, the term “kite surfing” is a style of kiteboarding that refers to wave riding. Kite surfers at Silver Strand State Beach in Coronado have a designated area spanning 132 yards along the beach where they can launch and land, and an approximately one mile area to surf.
If you want to see starfish, mussels, anemones, limpets and moon snails, visit the tide pools on the beach in front of the Hotel del Coronado. A team of tide pool volunteers along with City Lifeguard Services interact with tide pool visitors to answer questions about the marine life. Coronado Tide Pools Interpretive Program was formed to raise awareness about this special ecosystem and to teach visitors about conservation.
